[edit]After vocational training as a wholesaler, Jensen did community service with the Arbeiterwohlfahrt in Duisburg's homeless settlements. He then studied social work with a focus on social planning at the University of Applied Sciences for Social Affairs in Düsseldorf. He became a lecturer at the University of Trier and a freelance social planner.[1]
In 1994 he was appointed State Secretary and Head of the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Family and Health in Rhineland-Palatinate.[2] He resigned from his position in 1999 to care for his wife, who died of cancer. A year later he met Malu Dreyer and later married her.
Klaus Jensen was elected mayor of the city of Trier in September 2006. He ran as an independent candidate and was supported by the SPD and the Greens. He won all electoral districts and received 66.9 percent of the vote. This was the first time since 1945 that Trier was not governed by a CDU mayor. In the new election of Trier's mayor in 2014, Jensen did not run for a second term for reasons of age and therefore left office on 31 March 2015.[3]
Klaus Jensen is married to Malu Dreyer (SPD), minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate.[1]
