The La Crosse River Conservancy is a 381 acre Nature reserve from the nature conservation association Mississippi Valley Conservancy in La Crosse, Wisconsin, United States.

Geography[edit]

The La Crosse River Conservancy is located in the Driftless Area, a glacially formed region that stretches across southeastern Minnesota, southwestern Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa, and extreme northwestern Illinois. The preserve is located in La Crosse County between Wisconsin State Highway 16 to the west, Interstate 90 to the north, and the Canadian Pacific Railway railroad line to the south. The La Crosse River runs partly in the conservation area.

A hiking trail begins west of the Stoney Creek Hotel on South Kinney Coulee Road.

Info on the La Crosse River Conservancy[edit]

The La Crosse River Conservancy was the Mississippi Valley Conservancy's first land acquisition project in 1999, a cooperative effort with Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, Western Technical College, the cities of La Crosse and Onalaska, and several private landowners to preserve wetlands along the La Crosse River behind the Valley View Mall area. Of the 381 acres, 168 acres are owned by the Mississippi Valley Conservancy and 213 acres (on both sides of the La Crosse River) are owned by the City of La Crosse. This partnership is a public-private collaborative project to preserve this unique river valley and its associated riparian forests, marsh meadows and open wetlands. Previously, the land was used as farmland, pastureland and meadows for hay. Following the restoration work, this marshland once again provides flood protection and serves as a migration refuge and habitat for many animal species.[1][2]

Animal species in the La Crosse River Conservancy[edit]

The species American kestrel, bald eagle, blue-winged teal, Canada goose, Canadian beaver, coyote, muskrat, red fox, red-tailed hawk, rough-legged hawk, Sandhill crane, and Sedge wren occur in the area.[2]
