Lindsey Lauren Visser (November 13, 1991-present) is an American historian, researcher, and the current City of Buffalo Historian. She was named to the position in 2024 and is the first woman to hold the office.
The City of Buffalo Historian is part of the network of municipally appointed historians across New York State tasked with preserving and promoting regional history.[1]
She also serves as the Executive Director of the Niagara Aerospace Museum.[2]
Early Life & Education[edit]
Lindsey Lauren Visser was born in Buffalo, New York on November 13th, 1991 to Dutch and Italian American parents.[3]
She attended Mount Saint Mary Academy in Kenmore, NY before beginning her studies at Canisius College. She majored in History, Political Science, and European Studies and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) magna cum laude.[4]
In the fall of 2014, she enlisted in a year of service with the AmeriCorps ABLE program and taught middle school social studies in the Buffalo Public Schools.[5]
In 2015, she began her graduate studies at The University of Oxford (Exeter College, Oxford) in Modern British and European History. She received her Master of Studies (MSt) in 2016.[6]
Career[edit]
Upon returning to Buffalo, Visser began her career in the museum field at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site as the Programs & Digital Content Coordinator before becoming the Development & Communication Manager in 2019.[7]
Additionally, she worked at The Buffalo History Museum and Forest Lawn Cemetary on the interpretive side.[8]
In 2021, Visser joined the Centro Culturale Italiano di Buffalo as Deputy Director and was named Executive Director in March of 2023.[9][10]
The Niagara Aerospace Museum named Visser as the organization's Executive Director in March of 2024.[11]
She has served on the boards of the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village,[12] the Niagara Frontier Council for the Social Studies, [13], and the Erie County Bicentennial Committee.[14] In 2022, she was named to the steering committee for the Erie Canal Bicentennial Commemoration.
Research, projects, & publications[edit]
Lindsey Lauren Visser has been a reoccurring guest on the American History Hit Podcast hosted by Don Wildman. Her episodes include "The Race That Sold the Car to America" and "The Assassination of William McKinley".
During the Erie County Bicentennial, Visser worked on the Hometown Heritage video series which highlighted some of the historic locations around Erie County.[15][16]
Visser also served as a writer and editor for the first two seasons of The Buffalo History Museum Podcast.[17] In 2021, it was named Best Podcast in the Buffalo Spree Magazine Best of WNY contest.

City of Buffalo Historian[edit]
Lindsey Lauren Visser was named City of Buffalo Historian on March 11, 2024. She was appointed to the position by Mayor Byron Brown.[18]
As per the Local Government Historian Law (section 57.07 of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Law of 1919) each city, town, village, and county shall appoint a local historian for the benefit of the preservation and promotion of regional history. [1]
Visser's appointment came in preparation for the Erie Canal Bicentennial in 2025, the American Semiquinsential (NYS250) in 2026, and Freedom 2027 marking NYS' abolition of slavery.
