Nofal Hammadi al-Sultan is an Iraqi politician who was the Governor of Nineveh Governorate from April 2015 until May 2015.Nofal Hammadi al-Sultan, the governor of Nineveh Province in Iraq, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday when gunmen opened fire on his convoy in eastern Mosul. The governor's bodyguards promptly responded, engaging the attackers and successfully thwarting the assault.[1]

Iraqi Army Colonel Ahmad al-Jubouri informed Anadolu Agency that there were no casualties reported in the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attempt on al-Sultan's life.

Nineveh Province, of which Mosul is the provincial capital, has experienced significant unrest in recent years. Eastern Mosul, in particular, was declared fully liberated from the Islamic State (ISIS) in January, following a prolonged military campaign by Iraqi forces. However, despite the liberation declaration, the extremist group continues to destabilize the area, launching sporadic attacks on both military personnel and civilians.

Nineveh Province, historically significant and rich in ancient ruins, is located in the northern part of Iraq. It borders Syria, Turkey, and the Kurdish regions of Iraq. Its capital, Mosul, is the country's second-largest city and was notably occupied by ISIS from 2014 to 2017. The province's diverse population includes Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, Yazidis, and other groups, reflecting the rich cultural mosaic of the region.[2]
