This is a list of organizations promoting literacy. It is a list of literacy centers? I'd rather this be a list of programs teaching reading to adults, mostly. Like where you could volunteer at. "Organizations promoting literacy" is too vague?

Literacy can be complicated, but at its simplest it is the ability to read and write. Reading § Teaching reading. there are concepts of Balanced literacy and Structured literacy. Multiple approaches. For the teaching of writing see [[Composition Studies and Teaching Writing in the United States

In the U.S., the term "Literacy Volunteers of America" was widely known, and various subsidiaries continue as "Literacy Volunteers of ___", but the organization was merged and renamed to become ProLiteracy, which may be practically unheard of.

"Teaching Adults to Read" George James, January 18, 1998: The Syracuse-based organization, founded in 1962, had 400 affiliates in 44 states. "Between 40 million and 44 million adult Americans are functionally illiterate, unable to locate an intersection on a street map or fill out a simple form, according to a survey released by the United States Department of Education in 1993. Another 40 million are at a second level, said the report by the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, meaning they have difficulty answering questions about facts in a newspaper article." What are member organizations of ProLiteracy, are they mostly named "Literacy Volunteers of __"? "Literacy Volunteers of America" is perhaps legal name of New Jersey based one, see "Literacy Volunteers of America" at Guidestar/CharityNavigator, need to check its 990 filing.
