The Pune Porsche crash was a fatal hit and run incident that occurred in the early morning hours of May 19, 2024, in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, India. A luxury electric car, Porsche Taycan, allegedly driven by minor Vedant Agarwal, son of prominent builder Vishal Agarwal collided with a motorcycle carrying two young IT professionals..

The motorcycle riders, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta (both aged 24), were killed in the Incident.

This case is marred by political influence due to the high profile builder being involved.

A Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pune on Sunday granted bail to the minor, on the condition that he submits a 300-word essay on road accidents after studying all traffic rules and regulations at the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The Board also directed that the parents of the minor shall take care that he will not be involved in such offences in the future and kept away from bad company.

The teen had reportedly claimed addiction to alcohol in his bail plea. The police remain optimistic about their case, aiming to have the teenager remanded until their application to try him as an adult is decided.

Incident

On May 18, 2024, Saturday, at around 10:40pm Vedant Agarwal (a minor at the time), son of Brahma realty chief Vishal Agarwal with his friends was recorded by CCTV at Pub Cosie in Koregaon Park Pune. They moved to a second pub, Blak Mariott, at 12:10am (May 19, Sunday) after Cosie stopped serving them.

At around 2:15am Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta were recorded on a motorcycle on CCTV taking a U-Turn at an intersection in the Yerwada area. Just that moment a speeding Porsche allegedly driven by Vedant Agarwal rammed into their motorcycle. The two died from their injuries.

Investigation and Arrests

An investigation into the collision was launched by Pune police.

The minor driver was booked for rash and negligent driving, causing harm by endangering safety of lives, death by negligence under Sections 304A(causing death by negligence), 279(rash driving), 337(causing hurt by act) ,338(causing grievous hurt by act) and 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as provisions of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Act. The juvenile was also booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and is likely to be tried as a adult.

The police were reportedly not merely applying Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with causing death by negligence. Instead, they were invoking Section 304, asserting that the teenager had knowledge that his reckless actions—driving a Porsche without a number plate at high speed on a narrow street after consuming alcohol—could likely cause death.

As per Pune Police Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, the accused, along with his friends, first visited Cosie, a restaurant-pub, at 10:40 pm on Saturday, where he spent Rs 48,000 on drinks.

The police arrested Cosie hotel's owner Naman Bhutada, bar counter manager Sachin Katkar and Blak club manager Sachin Sangle, for serving alcohol to the juvenile.

Arrest of Vishal Agarwal

Following the accident, a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against Vishal Agarwal, who had subsequently fled.

Details of the accused's movements after the incident are based on police reports. These reports indicate that the accused initially traveled to various locations within Pune, including a farmhouse in Daund. He then proceeded to Kolhapur, where he met an acquaintance.

From Kolhapur, the accused allegedly attempted to mislead authorities. Police reports state that he instructed his driver to take his car towards Mumbai, while he himself traveled to Sambhajinagar in a friend's vehicle. He reportedly switched off his primary phone and used a new number during this time.

The accused's location was eventually traced by Pune Crime Branch teams. Details on how they achieved this remain under investigation, but reports mention the use of technical surveillance, GPS tracking, CCTV footage analysis, and intercepted messages. These efforts led to his apprehension in a lodge located in Sambhajinagar.

Accusation of preferential treatment and corruption

There were reports that Pizza's and burgers were being ordered for the accused in the Yeravda police station creating the atmosphere of VIP treatment.

NCP Ajit pawar faction MLA Sunil Tingre allegedly visited the Yeravada police station to intervene and bail out the accused, he later made a statement denying it but admitted that Vishal Agarwal had made a call to him right after the incident..

Aftermath

The ongoing case has generated large public outcry, with vigils and protests being held by the public.

Victims

Aneesh, originally from Madhya Pradesh's Umaria, was a Computer Science graduate of Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Engineering & Technology, Pune. Due to financial issues at home, Aneesh was bearing the expenses of the education of his younger brother in Pune.

Ashwini was also a Computer Science graduate from Modern Education Society's College of Engineering, Pune. According to her mother, Koshta, who was killed days before her father’s birthday, had booked a ticket to Jabalpur to surprise him on his birthday.

Both worked at the same company
