Raid on Royal Casino Marine (Chinese: 霸王花之皇家賭船; pinyin: huáng jiā dǔ chuán; Jyutping: wong4 gaa1 dou2 syun4; lit.'Royal Gambling Ship'[1]) is a 1990 Hong Kong action film. It is the third film in a series that began with The Inspector Wears Skirts and continued with The Inspector Wears Skirts II. It is also known in Chinese under the titles Royal Gambling Boat (Part 3 of Overlord Flower) (Chinese: 皇家賭船(霸王花第三集); pinyin: huáng jiā dǔ chuán (bà wáng huā dì sān jí); Jyutping: wong4 gaa1 dou2 syun4 (baa3 wong4 faa1 dai6 saam1 zaap6)) and Overlord Flower Royal Gambling Boat[2] (Chinese: 霸王花之皇家賭船; pinyin: bà wáng huā zhī huáng jiā dǔ chuán; Jyutping: baa3 wong4 faa1 zi1 wong4 gaa1 dou2 syun4) and in English The Inspector Wears Skirts III.[1]

Plot

[edit]

Since the events of The Inspector Wears Skirts II, the SKIRTs have been decommissioned and Madame Wu (Hu) and Kan (Fung) have been married. The film begins with Kan and Nam (Lau), another RHKP officer, being informed by their superior (Woo Fung) of some guns that have been stolen.

The SKIRTs are then re-trained by Kan and Wu, with the SKIRTs attempting various plots to try to get out of or lesson the harshness of their trials.

Eventually, the SKIRTs are deemed ready, and head to the titular gambling boat to accomplish their mission. The film parodies various movies, including God of Gamblers (and the Hong Kong gambling movie craze which was then current more generally)[1], A Chinese Ghost Story and Friday the 13th.[1] The criminals strike and violence ensues, with Madame Wu parachuting in to save the rest of the SKIRTs and Kan.

Critical reception

[edit]

In a retrospective write-up, John Charles gives the film a middling review, rating it 5/10 and saying "most of the humor is too weak and obvious to be genuinely funny. However, this remains a relatively painless timewaster".[1]
