Robert Gow was born in Toronto, Ontario. Attracted to the world of film from a young age, he pursued his passion academically by studying film and media at Queen's University from 2011-2015.[1] According to Gow, filmmaking was the only career he ever envisioned for himself, motivated by a drive to tell important and untold stories through a compelling medium.[1]

Career[edit]

Real Faces (2023)[edit]

Robert Gow is notably recognized as the director and producer of the Canadian television show Real Faces. The show, filmed in Fredericton, New Brunswick, is a collaborative effort by Gow, Robyn Abbott, and Paul Gardner under the creation of Vulture’s Bluff. It aired on Bell TV1, unraveling the diverse and often untold stories of unique individuals, including MMA fighters, drag queens, and residential school survivors, among others. Real Faces was hailed for its depth, sensitivity, and commitment to sharing diverse narratives, earning extensive media coverage across Canada.[2][3][1][4]

Losing Yourself (2023)[edit]

In addition to his work in television, Gow directed the documentary film Losing Yourself. This film, created in collaboration with Robyn Abbott and Michelle Dudas, delves into the emotional journey of Katrina O'Neil, who grappled with significant memory loss following a cardiac arrest at 29. She lost all memory of her three children and her entire adult life. This documentary received international attention, was featured in various global publications and was hailed for its heart-wrenching narrative and delicate handling of a sensitive subject.[5][6][7][8][9]

Forced Disappearance (2023)[edit]

Gow directed the 2022 documentary Forced Disappearance. The film was a character study of Lateef Johar Baloch, a refugee who went on 46 day hunger strike before having to flee Pakistan to avoid political assassination.[10]

Real Food Stories (2022)[edit]

Gow also directed and produced Real Food Stories, a Bell TV1 show highlighting the significant challenges facing the food industry and the individuals devoted to addressing them. The series shone a light on issues such as sustainable farming, soil degradation, and the struggle of small-scale producers, bringing to the forefront the pressing concerns and the potential pathways to addressing them.[11][12]
