From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Savani Anbalagan (Tamil: சவானி அன்பழகன், born February 09, 1987) is a Indian experimental and theoretical biologist specializing in molecular biology and developmental biology and an assistant professor in biological sciences. He is a group leader at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Faculty of Biology at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland.

Scientific biography[edit]

Anbalagan graduated in Biotechnology from the School of Chemical and Biotechnology at the SASTRA University in Thanjavur in 2009. From 2009 to 2012 Anbalagan performed his doctoral studies in the area of yeast molecular genetics at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Milan. His doctoral supervisor was Prof. Maria Pia Longhese and his research concentrated on genetic mechanisms of telomere protection. Anbalagan completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Gil Levkowitz in the Dept. of Molecular Cell Biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.[1][2] His research was focused on the molecular genetics underlying neurohypophysis development in zebrafish.[3][4] In 2020, Anbalagan joined at the Faculty of Biology at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and his research is funded by the National Science Centre, Poland.[5][6]

Notable research awards[edit]

During his doctoral studies, Anbalagan was a recipient of the European Union Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellowship.[7] Anbalagan was also awarded the Israel Council for Higher Education VATAT (Hebrew acronym for הוועדה לתכנון ותקצוב - Va'adat Tichnun VeTiktzuv), and the Koshland scholarship from the Weizmann Institute during his postdoctoral studies.[8][9]

Major scientific achievements[edit]

Anbalagan proposed various new concepts in biology that includes gasoreceptors, gasocrine signaling, gasocrinology, and aquareceptors.[10][11][12][13] These concepts are published in journals of scientific societies including the American Physiological Society and the Polish Biochemical Society.[14][15] His other scientific achievements include identification of synthetic lethality among telomere protection protein-encoding genes in budding yeast, genetics of neurohypophysis development in zebrafish embryos and developing the zebrafish ligand-receptor atlas.[16][17]
