Early Life and Education

Dr. Shivaram Prasad Singh was born on March 15, 1957, in Wardha, Maharashtra, India. He spent his childhood in Cuttack, Odisha, where he attended Cambridge School^[1] and Stewart School^[2]. Singh completed his Indian School Certificate Examinations in 1971 and initially pursued Chemistry Honours at Ravenshaw College. However, due to illness, he shifted his focus to medicine and secured admission to SCB Medical College, Cuttack in 1975. He graduated with an MBBS degree and later completed his MD in General Medicine from the same institution.

Singh pursued superspecialization training in Gastroenterology at Christian Medical College Vellore, where he served as a Senior Registrar from 1986 to 1988. He obtained his DM degree in Gastroenterology from Madras University in 1988.

Career

Upon completing his training, Dr. Singh returned to Odisha and joined SCB Medical College, Cuttack. He was instrumental in developing the Department of Gastroenterology at his alma mater, serving as a faculty member from 1992 and as Head of the Department from 2001 until his retirement.^[3] Under his leadership, the department gained prominence, particularly for research in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and hepatitis B prevention. In 2010, Singh initiated the DM Course in Gastroenterology at SCB Medical College.

Singh has also held prominent positions in various medical organizations, including Secretary General of the Indian National Association for Study of the Liver (INASL) from 2009 to 2015^[4], President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG) from 2012 to 2013^[5], and is currently the President of the South Asian Association for Study of the Liver (SAASL)^[6].

Hepatitis B Awareness Movement

In 2001, Dr. Singh launched a movement for hepatitis B awareness and vaccination from Cuttack, Odisha.^[7] This initiative was aligned with the birthday of Nobel laureate Dr. Baruch Samuel Blumberg, who discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed the vaccine. The World Health Organization (WHO) declaring July 28 as World Hepatitis Day in 2012.

Achievements

Dr. Singh is renowned for his contributions to the field of gastroenterology and hepatology. He has authored approximately 150 research publications and several book chapters. His work has led to the development of Indian National Consensus/Guidelines/Position Papers on gastrointestinal and liver diseases, including the Bhubaneswar Helicobacter pylori management guidelines and the Puri Consensus on Primary Liver Cancer.

He founded the South Asian Association for Study of the Liver (SAASL) in 2012 and served as its Secretary General until 2018. Singh has organized over a hundred Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs and conferences, significantly contributing to medical education in South Asia.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Singh has received numerous accolades in recognition of his professional achievements and dedication:

Fellowships: Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (FACG), American Gastroenterology Association (AGAF)^[8], Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (FSGEI), Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP (Edin)), Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI), and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCPS (Glas)). Awards: Master of Indian Society of Gastroenterology (MISG) by the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (2022)^[9], ISG Zydus Oration (2016), ISG S.R. Naik Memorial Award (2017), INASL Madanagopalan Memorial Oration (2022)^[4], and "Gastro Ratna" by the Gut Chat Club of Kolkata (2016). Conferred with the title of “National Professor” by the Indian Medical Association College of GP (2014).
