La llamada de la tribu (The Call of the Tribe in English) is a non-fiction book written by Peruvian nobel prize winner novelist Mario Vargas Llosa, whose first edition was published in 2018. The books aims at exposing a bit about the work of seven important thinkers related to liberalism (here, liberalism ought to be taken as classical liberalism), and who were responsible for turning the author (who was a marxist in his youth) into a defender of liberalism. Each chapter in the book is dedicated to describe a little about the thought and life of one person. Those are, in this order : Adam Smith, José Ortega y Gasset, Friedrich Hayek, Karl Popper, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin e Jean-François Revel.
Many of the passages in the book accompany the author personal vision, often expressing admiration for both the work and life stories of the persons being described. At the same time, though, Vargas Llosa condemns certain actions and thoughts expressed by the thinkers (such as Hayek´s implicit defense of Pinochet's dictatorship and Popper supporting a strictly regulatory system to control television content, an idea that the Peruvian writer judges as being against the liberal and democratic principles defended by the Austrian philosopher).
The text is also enriched by the description of personal encounter with some of the thinkers and other important personalities related to the subjects in the book, such as Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.
