The Sun Never Sets on Lake Gregory is a 2014 Australian TV series produced by Perth Television based off the namesake 1965 film The Sun Never Sets on Lake Gregory. The series, despite its rather large budget of $3.4 million had little success outside of Western Australia and New Zealand, having only a small organised fanbase in Italy. The series streamed on Hulu briefly but was ended in October of 2018 because of poor reviews and little to no consideration.

Plot

[edit]

The series follows the story of the small fictional Western Australian town of Feurigerde (Located roughly 1 hour from Kumarina) in the post war era. It principally revolves around Barbara Cassinger as she tries to raise her 8 sisters (Maria, Amelia, Audrey, Ava, Daisy, Adriana, Clara and Isabella) while also being the community pillar and a soon to be wife. Her dad, Joel Cassinger, is a war veteran suffering heavily from PTSD, making him unable to maintain his daughters. He is accompanied by his uncle, referred to as "Uncle Sam" who is often shown as lazy and unable to work. Barbara is closely helped by her boyfriend, William Boiler, and her cousin Robert Cassinger. Numerous "enemies" will appear, however none will reach the magnitude of Krauss Bess, the rich owner of the local mine. The small town will face numerous problems, such as poverty, death, greed from the mining companies, the Emu war and the Great Depression. The series ends in 1931 with the economic destruction of the town. An eleventh season is still pending, after being announced in 2021, however it has not been released yet.

Reception

[edit]

After being released in 2014 the series was heavily criticised for its controversial views on the mining industry and the Australian Government, it was praised however by most of Western Australia and New Zealand for it's bravery to speak out, despite its limited success there are many fans around the world, however only one organised group exists in Italy. The original film was banned for its position on Western Australian independence. In March of 2018 the series was launched on Hulu, however a few months later it was removed due to limited views and negative comments. Today the series is virtually unfindable as all streaming was ended in 2019. Perth News ended daily distribution in 2019 after the 10th season was released. However streaming remains in New Zealand.
