East Northumberland Secondary School is a secondary school located in Brighton, Ontario, Canada.

It was also the topic of a song performed by Miley Cyrus called "East Northumberland High", written by ENSS's own Samantha Moore.[1]

Clubs

ENSS offers many diverse clubs. Astronomy Club, Art Club, Community Challenge, The Dragon's Voice student newspaper, Student Drill Team, Science Alliance, Jazz eh!, Student Government, Concert Band, Chess Club, Culinary, ECO-Cell, Student Beautification Committee, Robotics, Drama Club, Video Production, and many others.

Sports

There are also many sports at ENSS. They participate in sports such as Curling, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Rugby, Cross Country, and Track and Field. ENSS has a reputation for excelling at Track and Field. For 27 years straight ENSS has captured the Bay of Quinte title.

Dramatic arts

ENSS has a reputation in the surrounding area for putting on productions of plays and musicals. A few notable productions of the past include While the Lights Were Out, Les Belles Soeurs and The Laramie Project. Two new plays graced the ENSS stage in 2010: Anne Frank and Me, showcasing the Junior's talents, and Voices 2000, which primarily cast Seniors. Prior to 2007, these "off-year" shows, which run opposite to the school's major musical productions, were completely student-run. Senior students were selected to direct, stage manage, costume, promote, schedule, and oversee the entire process. Some notable student-run productions include the musical, "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" (2001), Shakespeare's "Macbeth" (2003), and Charles Dickens' "Nicholas Nickleby" (2005). Musicals are what give ENSS its reputation, however, with such performances of the past like Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, Oklahoma!, Oliver!, Evita, Grease, Les Misérables, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Beauty and the Beast, Seussical, Guys and Dolls, and a production of The Sound of Music which was presented in the spring of 2014, with much praise from audiences from across Ontario. It featured leads Michael Osvald, Anna Barker, Andrea McMillan-Irwin, and Deirdre Cleveland. Their most recent production, Mary Poppins starred Marlisa Hows as Mary Poppins and Kyler Tonkin as Bert. Other leads included Christian Hodge, Natalie Cummings, Genevieve Nevin-Jones, and Alora Stockermans. The 2016 production was wonderfully received, following suit in ENSS' long line of successful musicals.

Reputation as a "Green" School

Over the years, ENSS has been known as a "Green" school, with regular garbage clean-ups, tree-plantings, and a heavily involved Environmental Club.[2] After many years of fund raising, ENSS was able to install a wind turbine in June 2009,[3] generating power and reducing ENSS's carbon footprint. In the summer of 2011, ENSS installed solar panels on the roof of the school. ENSS was handpicked from over 100 schools to receive solar panels proving the saying of "blue and gold make green" and generating an estimated 46,909 kWh of energy annually. ENSS is also involves in a program called ECO-Cell and E-Waste. ECO-Cell is where we take old cell phones and recycle them properly which continues throughout the entire school year, and E-Waste is an event which cannot happen all the time but is where we have a truck come in and we collect any TV monitors or any electronics with precious metals and properly dispose of them. Also the Student Beautification Committee is a group which is focused on cleaning up litter on school property and surrounding areas. ENSS has also been getting a yearly tradition going which is an event about sustainable living called 'Earth Song'. In the future ENSS wants to try to build a living wall.

Terry Fox Fundraising

The school has fundraised over $1,000,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation to date. In the 2013/2014 year the staff and students helped raise $44 000. The fundraising efforts also bring out some amazing school spirit with participants often dressed and painted up in school colours while they run through the community.
