A horse show futurity is a type of horse show competition reserved specifically for young horses. Futurities are common in the cutting, barrel racing, and reining disciplines.

Requirements

To compete in most futurities, a horse must be entered in the specific competition before or shortly after birth. It may only compete against other young horses of the same approximate age.[1] Younger horses are shown in hand, but those two or three years of age are more often ridden.[2]

The National Reining Horse Association holds a large futurity every year,[3] as does the National Cutting Horse Association.[4]
