Star Trek Beyond is an upcoming American science fiction action film and the sequel to Star Trek Into Darkness. It is the thirteenth film in the Star Trek film franchise.

Production

During an interview with HitFix, it was confirmed that Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will do at least one more film. Abrams has confirmed that he will not be directing the third film but will produce it.[1][2][3][4] The film is rumored to be released in 2016 coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the franchise.[5] In December 2013, it was announced and confirmed that Roberto Orci will return as screenwriter with Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, but Orci's long-time collaborator Alex Kurtzman will not return as screenwriter[6] and Joe Cornish will not be involved in the film.[7] On April 22, 2014, Orci told Variety that he may be directing the film.[8] On May 9, 2014, Deadline reported that Orci was considered the lead candidate for director of the film.[9] A few days later, Variety confirmed that Orci will indeed direct the next installment.[10]

In August 2014, it was announced that Paramount had pushed back the release of the film to 2016 in time for the 50th anniversary celebration of the late Gene Roddenberry's original sci-fi show.[11] In mid-August, it was also announced that first draft of the script has been completed by Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne and had submitted for approval.[12] On September 22, it was revealed that William Shatner was supposed to get a cameo in the first film but he didn't get to and not in Star Trek Into Darkness too, but he might be getting a cameo in the third film.[13] On September 27, ComicBook.com reported that Shatner had confirmed that he was contacted by producer Abrams, who offered him a role by director's choice.[14] On October 2, Jeffrey Chernov was set as producer.[15] In October 2014, John Cho was asked about Orci directing the third film, on which he replied, "I think he's going to blow people away."[16] On December 5, it was confirmed that Orci had exited the film, while Edgar Wright and some other directors were being eyed to take on the director's seat.[17] On December 10, KOMO News reported that actor and director of some Star Wars films Jonathan Frakes told that he had made contact with J.J. Abrams, and Frakes said, "I would love that job."[18]

On December 22, 2014, Justin Lin was confirmed as director of Star Trek 3. The film will still be scripted by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.[19] On December 24, 2014, Orci told Trek Movies that he will produce the film, but will not write the film.[20] On January 21, 2015, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung were hired to write the screenplay, while Pegg would also reprise his role of Scotty.[21] In February, Bryan Cranston was rumored to play the villainous role in the film.[22] Later on March 25, 2015, Variety posted that Idris Elba was in early talks to play the villain.[23] Sofia Boutella was also set on April 10, 2015 to play an unspecified female lead role in the film.[24]

Filming

The filming is set to begin in spring 2015 for a 2016 release.[25] In September 2014, actor Quinto revealed that the shooting of the film would begin within next six months (Spring 2015).[26] The filming would began in the mid-February in Vancouver, where mostly of the film would be shot.[27] Some of the shooting would also take place in Seoul, South Korea.[28] Principal photography on the film is set to begin on April 15, 2015 at Vancouver Film Studios.[29]

Release

On December 23, 2014, it was announced that the film will be released on July 8, 2016.[30]
