2024 MrBeast controversies

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2024, American YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, better known by his channel name MrBeast, and his associates were subject to numerous controversies. The controversies concerned a variety of allegations made against MrBeast and his associates, including allegations of child sexual abuse, faking videos, rigging challenges, promoting gambling to children, discrimination, fraud and running illegal lotteries amongst other allegations.[1]

Donaldson's content is primarily viewed by children and tweens, and as of 2024 the MrBeast channel is the most subscribed YouTube channel, with over 300 million subscribers. Donaldson is known for his challenge videos and philanthropy, and a significant number of his videos involve expensive prizes and/or large amounts of money being given away.

The majority of the allegations have been against the company, Donaldson himself and his former colleague Ava Kris Tyson (born Chris Tyson). Tyson has been accused of child sexual abuse.[2]

Child sexual abuse allegations

[edit]

In July 2024, Ava Kris Tyson (previously known as Chris Tyson)[a] was accused of grooming and sexting minors. She admitted using "edgy" humor in messages to minors, but denied any wrongdoing.[4] However, the allegations led to Tyson being fired by Donaldson and she has not appeared in any MrBeast-related material since. Donaldson stated that he was disgusted by Tyson's behavior.[5][6]

On July 25, it was reported that Donaldson had hired investigators to investigate the allegations against Tyson.[7]

Discriminatory remarks

[edit]

Donaldson has been repeatedly accused of making racist, homophobic and transphobic comments in the past. Donaldson admitted using discriminatory language for the purpose of humor.[8][9] For example, in several now-deleted tweets, he jokingly used the homophobic slurs fag and faggot, which caused controversy after it was reported by online news outlets in 2018. He apologized for the tweets and deleted them after they surfaced online.[10]

DogPack 404 allegations

[edit]

In July 2024, YouTuber DogPack 404, an alleged former MrBeast employee, uploaded a video tilted "I Worked for MrBeast, He's a Fraud", where he accused Donaldson and his company of conducting illegal lotteries, faking signatures, rigging challenges, faking videos and giveaways, promoting gambling to children, fraud and false advertising his videos and his products such as the Feastables chocolate brand.[11][12][13] The video used several different examples of these behaviors as evidence for his argument.

In response to the video, the MrBeast Company sent a cease and desist letter to DogPack 404 on July 31, which DogPack 404 uploaded to X (formerly known as Twitter).[14] On August 1, he received another cease and desist letter and was accused of drug use, which he strongly denied.[15]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ Tyson is a transgender woman. She came out as transgender in 2023, well after she had been employed by Donaldson.[3]
