J. D. Slater is an American gay pornographic film director as well as an accomplished soundtrack composer who co-founded Raging Stallion Studios with Chris Ward in 1999.

Biography

Slater was born on Long Island and raised by Irish Catholic parents. In order to get away from home, he went to UCLA, where he received his bachelor's degree in psychology, followed by a master's in clinical psychology at Fordham in New York. As he said in an interview:"porno was the farthest thing from my mind. I was expecting to be a psychotherapist.".[1]

In 1981, a photographer friend's casual photo landed Slater on the cover of Numbers, director Joe Gage (also known as Tim Kincaid) saw it and demanded that Slater appear in his movie, HandSome. Slater was soon appearing in films by Wakefield Poole and other early producers of gay erotica.

By learning from these people, Slater learned how to make a film. He said, "In 1986, I'd established my image, and learned how to make a film. So I started directing and producing." Also in 1989, a series of challenges were thrust upon Slater. He was diagnosed with cancer, HIV and tuberculosis, and also faced some aggressive legal prosecution for some of his porn work. [1]

Consciously abandoning the mainstream industry he felt had gotten sterile, Slater produced what he calls his "big guerilla filmmaking things"; titles like Smut, Motorsexual, and Confessions. For the 1990 feature Guilty, he started his own production company, and nearly landed in jail when copies he'd shipped to England were seized and declared obscene.
