Yoo Jeong-yeon (Template:Hangul Hanja: 俞定延; born 1 November 1996), better known mononymously as Jeongyeon, is a South Korean singer-songwriter. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Twice, which was formed by JYP Entertainment through the television program Sixteen.
In 2016–2017, she co-hosted the television show Inkigayo with her sister Gong Seung-yeon, for which they both won the Newcomer Award at the 2016 SBS Entertainment Awards. Jeongyeon is one of the three members of Twice who was voted among the top 20 most popular idols in South Korea in Gallup Korea's annual music poll for three years in a row from 2016 to 2018.
Early life
Jeongyeon was born on 1 November 1996 as Yoo Kyung-wan in Suwon, Gyeonggi, South Korea.[1] She is the younger sister of the actress Gong Seung-yeon.[2]
Career
Pre-debut
She joined JYP Entertainment after passing the sixth open audition on 1 March 2010.[citation needed] From 2013 to early 2015, it was expected that Jeongyeon would become a member of the new JYP girl group, 6mix, along with current Twice members Nayeon and Jihyo. However, this new project was cancelled and in the end they did not debut.[3][4]
2015–present: Sixteen, Twice and solo activities
In 2015, Jeongyeon competed in the survival program Sixteen, which was to determine the final members of the girl group Twice. In the final episode, she was chosen to be one of the members.[5]
She and her sister co-hosted the South Korean music program Inkigayo from July 2016 to January 2017,[2][6] for which they both won the Newcomer Award at the 2016 SBS Entertainment Awards.[7]
In Gallup Korea's annual music poll, Jeongyeon was voted among the top 20 most popular idols in South Korea for three consecutive years from 2016 to 2018, alongside her bandmates Nayeon and Tzuyu.[8][9][10][11]
