Joel Hanley (born June 8, 1991 in Keswick, Ontario) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League (NHL). Hanley made his NHL debut on March 20, 2016.[1]

Playing career

Hanley played Junior A with the Newmarket Hurricanes before spending four seasons with the UMass Minutemen ice hockey of the NCAA.[2] Following his college career, he landed his first professional contract with the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates.[2] He spent two seasons (2013–2015) in Portland including a short demotion to the ECHL's Gwinnett Gladiators.[2]

In the summer of 2015, Hanley signed a two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens organization and reported to the team's AHL affiliate: the St. John's IceCaps.[3] Following a string of injuries to Canadiens' defencemen, Hanley was recalled and played his first NHL game on March 20, 2016. He contributed with his first two assists two days later.[1]
