John Renwick McAslan CBE, RIBA, FRSA, FRIAS, FRICS (born 1954) is a British architect and Executive Chairman of John McAslan + Partners.
Education and early career
John Renwick McAslan was educated at Dunoon Grammar School],[1] Dollar Academy and Edinburgh University, Scotland, obtaining a MA in Architecture along with the Diploma year prize in 1978.[2] He trained in Boston USA with Cambridge Seven Associates[3] before joining Richard Rogers and Partners in 1980.[4] He is Executive Chairman of John McAslan + Partners and is active in all of the practice's work.[5]
John McAslan + Partners was named World Architect of the Year in 2009.[6] The practice’s work has been extensively exhibited[7] and has received in excess of 75 international design awards,[8] including 15 RIBA national and international awards. John has taught and lectured widely[9] and is a Trustee of numerous cultural bodies.[10]
John McAslan’s work has been widely published internationally in professional journals, newspapers[11] and in the form of monographs,[12] the most recent of which is Transforming King’s Cross, a detailed account of the practice’s acclaimed[13] and award-winning[14] redevelopment of the station, and Discovering King's Cross, both published in 2012.
In 1997 John established the John McAslan Family Trust,[15] which, as a registered charity, provides support for arts and educational projects both in the UK and overseas.[4] In 2009 the Trust acquired the Burgh Hall, Dunoon. The intention is to create a cross-disciplinary arts venue and multi-purpose community centre, offering audiences diverse cultural opportunities.[16]
In 2012 John McAslan was appointed Commander of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen in the 2012 New Years Honours for services to architecture and appointed Honorary Consul of The Republic of Haiti in London.

One of the practice's recent projects is the £547 million redevelopment of London King's Cross railway station which opened in March 2012. The transformation of this Grade I listed structure has received numerous awards,[17] most recently the Europa Nostra.[18][19] Other key infrastructure projects include the new Crossrail Bond Street Station development, work on the Northern Line Extension[20] for TfL and the refurbishment of Crystal Palace Station in South London. Completed projects include Canning Town Station[21] on the Jubilee Line and ten stations for Delhi Metro, India.[22]
The practice's portfolio of award-winning projects in Britain and overseas includes infrastructure, commercial, residential, education, cultural, heritage, urban design, and landscape sectors. The practice has a reputation for delivering new-build architecture,[23] and giving vibrant and sustainable life to historic buildings through adaptive interventions;[24] completed projects include the Grade I listed modernist masterpiece, The De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill-on-Sea in England; the renowned Roundhouse arts venue arts venue in the London Borough of Camden; the redevelopment of the historic Stanislavsky Factory in Moscow which includes the restored Theatre where Chekhov's 'Cherry Orchard' was first performed; the complete restoration of the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following the devastating earthquake of 2010, and the British Embassy in Algiers.
The practice also has extensive experience of educational projects[25] - recently completed projects include the Academy in Enfield, Darwen Vale High School in Blackburn and Thomas Tallis School in Greenwich. Higher education projects include projects for Lancaster[26] and Manchester Universities[27] and the Courtauld Institute in London.
International projects include a recently commissioned masterplan for the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, Canada.[28] The practice is also working on a number of significant projects in Doha, Qatar, including a Cultural Forum,[29] a Mosque,[30] a school, a 5-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel and four museums[31] celebrating Qatari cultural heritage. Further demonstrating its international reach John McAslan + Partners has designed a Catholic Cathedral in Kericho, Kenya,[32] and is also active in Russia - current projects include the restoration and redevelopment of the Bolshevik Factory[33] in Moscow which will include an Art Gallery devoted to Russian Impressionist works.[34]
John McAslan + Partners has extensive experience of high-end residential developments, notably Ciftci Towers in Istanbul and the newly completed Wellington House[35] in Victoria, London.
Linking the practice's diverse range of work is a fundamental belief that architecture can drastically improve people's lives[36] and that intelligent, considered design can help the positive development of communities.[37] The practice’s core work runs in parallel with its Initiatives Unit, which delivers not-for-profit projects across the globe, such as housing in Haiti and a modular school design for rural Malawi.[38]
RIBA/ICE/McAslan Bursary
Set up in 2004 between the practice, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the bursary aims to give recognition to innovative design projects[39] and supports the energy, talent and creativity of architecture and engineering students, graduates, newly qualified architects and engineers committed to the progress of environmental and community issues in the UK or abroad.[40]
