John Wood Lewis Sr. (February 1, 1801 – July 11, 1865) was an American politician and physician who represented Georgia in the Confederate States Senate from 1862 to 1863.

Biography

Lewis was born on February 1, 1801, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina state legislature, 1830-1831; member of Georgia Senate, 1845; Senator from Georgia in the 1st Confederate States Congress, 1862-1863. He was elected on April 7, 1862, after Robert Toombs, former Confederate States Secretary of State, declined his election at the Congress's opening session on February 18. Lewis died on July 11, 1865, in Canton, Georgia.
