The Journal of Abnormal Psychology is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the American Psychological Association. The journal has been in publication for 125 years, and it is considered to be a "preeminent outlet for research in psychopathology." [1]
The Journal of Abnormal Psychology addresses the following major areas of focus:[2]
- psychopathology (etiology, development, symptomatology, and the course)
- normal processes in abnormal disorders
- pathological or atypical features of behavior of normal individuals
- experimental studies (with human or animal subjects) relating to the abnormal emotional behavior or pathology
- sociocultural effects on pathological processes (gender, ethnicity)
- tests of hypotheses from psychological theories that relate to abnormal behavior
History
The American Psychological Association began publication of the journal in April 1906. In 1921, the name was changed to the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and Social Psychology. The name reverted to simply the Journal of Abnormal Psychology in 1965, the same year that the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology began publication. [3]
Editors
The editor of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology is Sherryl Goodman of Emory University. Dr. Goodman is a former associate editor of the Journal of Family Psychology. She has served on the editing boards for other journals including Developmental Psychology and the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology. Dr. Goodman's research on developmental psychpopathology includes "the complex ways that depression is transmitted across generations." ref name="APA Monitor on Psychology">"Continuing a tradition of excellence". With the resources of the APA's new "online first" publication, full text manuscripts appear online as soon as the editors have completed the work. Authors must consult the APA's "Instruction for All Authors" for information regarding manuscript preparation, publication policies, permission, and figures.[4]
Calls for Papers
“Theoretical papers of scholarly substance on abnormality may be appropriate if they advance understanding of a specific issue directly relevant to abnormal psychology and fall within the length restrictions of a regular (not extended) article. The priority is empirical papers.” A study focused primarily on treatment efficacy should be submitted to the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology rather than the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Moreover, a longitudinal study focused on developmental influences of abnormal behavior should be submitted to the Journal of Abnormal Psychology.[4]
Abstracting and indexing
The journal is abstracted and indexed by MEDLINE/PubMed and the Social Science Citation Index. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2012 impact factor of 4.646, ranking it 7th out of 126 journals in the category "Psychology, Multidisciplinary"[5] and 7th out of 114 journals in the category "Psychology, Clinical".[6]
