Kaniyur is a suburb of Udmelpettai which is also a town panchayat in Tirupur District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kaniyur is also called Dravida Iyakkathin Thotti. It is one the 'K' village located near to udumalpet.
It is located on the banks of the Amaravathi River in the Tirupur District. Several State Ministers of the Tamil Nadu State have been born in this town namely K.A. Mathialagan, K A Krishnasamy.
Kaniyur have a famous Sivan temple,It was a ancient period temple.Kaniyur has an Old Mosque Which is 128 Yrs old [on 2015]. built and maintailed by Kaniyur Palli Paripalana Jam 'ath. Agricultural is the main occupation of people. Sugar cane,Rice,vethala kodikal is the famous Agricultural on kaniyur.They have many temple like kanimar Amman,karupaswami,Kali Amman and mariyaman,and also ayyanar kovil.They have one sidhas temple they provide medicine on Tuesday and Thursday. Kaniyur have Rice Mills For its Paddy Cultivation, Specifically A.R.Rice Mills[Now Defunct], Sulthaniya Rice Mill [started in 1938] etc.
Kaniyur is the junction of many villages to connect the town of Udumalpet,Dharapuram, Kadathur, Keeranur, Madathukulam and Palani.

Kaniyur has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 61%. In Kaniyur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
