Lakota is a city in, and the county seat of, Nelson County, North Dakota in the United States. Template:GR The population was 781 at the 2000 census. Lakota was founded in 1883.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 781 people, 345 households, and 212 families residing in the city. The population density was 764.2 people per square mile (295.6/km²). There were 387 housing units at an average density of 378.7/sq mi (146.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.82% White, 0.77% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.13% of the population. 48.0% were of Norwegian and 24.0% German ancestry according to Census 2000.
There were 345 households out of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 36.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.74.
In the city the population was spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 19.3% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 29.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 82.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $26,940, and the median income for a family was $37,292. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,819. About 7.7% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.4% of those under age 18 and 9.1% of those age 65 or over.
