Lazzaro Morelli
Lazzaro Morelli (30 October, 1608- 1690) was an Italian sculptor of the Baroque period. Born in Ascoli Piceno, the son of the Florentine sculptor Fulgenzio Morelli, who also trained Lazzaro's cousin, the artist Giuseppe Giosafatti. Lazzaro is best known for having worked in the studio of Gianlorenzo Bernini, and participating in the sculpting of one of the angel with the whip (scourge) of the Ponte Sant'Angelo in Rome. He also sculpted the statue of Benignity, for the St. Peter's tomb monument for Clement X. The tomb was designed by Mattia de' Rossi (1684) and the other sculptors were Ercole Ferrata (pope) and Giuseppe Mazzuoli (Clemency). He also completed some of the saints in the roof-line of the external colonnades of St. Peter's Basilica.[1] He also participated in the decoration of San Pietro Martire in Ascoli Piceno. Also of interest is the aedicule outside the church of San Francesco, used by the condemned led to execution.[2]
