  1. ^ a b In the 1943–44 and 1944–45 seasons the VfL competed as Kriegsspielgemeinschaft VfL 1848/Preußen Bochum together with Preußen 07 Elberfeld.
  2. ^ Due to World War II the 1944–45 season was abandoned, with only a few matches played.
  3. ^ The Oberliga West was introduced (1947–48), which moved the Landesliga Westfalen down one level on the West German league pyramid.
