Major characters

Niko Bellic

Nikolai "Niko" Bellic[1] is a fictional character in the Grand Theft Auto video game series. He is the main protagonist and playable character of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Niko is revealed to be guilty of previous criminal acts in his life, such as killing, selling and smuggling people. He wishes to begin a new life in Liberty City after being persuaded by his cousin Roman, who claims in his e-mails to Niko to be living the "American Dream." It is later revealed that these are lies to hide Roman's own failures. During the course of the story, Niko is looking for someone and will stop at nothing to find him, enlisting help from wherever he can. Niko is said to be in his mid-thirties and is Eastern European.[2]

Roman Bellic

Roman is Niko's cousin who resides in Liberty City. Roman claims to be living the "American Dream" and that he has two women, four hot tubs and fifteen sports cars, but in reality owns a gritty taxi firm in the heart of the city. He successfully manages to persuade his cousin Niko to move to the city using his deception. Roman is also heavily in debt with various figures around the city.[3]

Elizabeta

Elizabeta is a heavy-set black woman and successful drug-dealer in Bohan. She appears in the third trailer and in the promotional artwork for the game. Her artwork shows her to be much thinner than her appearance in the trailer. [4][5]

Little Jacob

Little Jacob is a Caribbean arms dealer who sells Niko weapons out of the trunk of his car. He and Roman are good friends.[6]

Minor characters

Francis McGreary

Francis McGreary is a corrupt cop who has "dirt on Niko's past." He threatens to reveal this information unless Niko helps him by obtaining various memory sticks with information about his own corruptions from lawyers and blackmailers alike. In one mission, he meets up with Niko in an area called Castle Gardens which is a coast-side hangout analogous to Battery Park overlooking the Statue of Happiness.[7] He wears a black suit and tie, has a short moustache, and has slicked blonde hair with a strong side parting. It is a possibility that he may be the main antagonist of the game.

Tom Goldberg

Tom Goldberg is a lawyer working for Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster, a law firm based in Liberty City. In a demo presented to journalists by Rockstar, Niko receives a phone call from police officer Francis McReary asking him to kill Tom Goldberg. Niko then acquires a cab and heads to an internet café named TW@ café and submits a fake résumé to Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster using the game's internet browser. Niko schedules an interview with Goldberg, before picking up some business clothes. When Niko arrives for his interview, he lets Goldberg ramble on a bit about video game violence (a possible reference to anti-video game lawyer Jack Thompson) before using a 9mm handgun to assassinate Goldberg in his office, and then soon after ends up in a fire fight with law enforcement.[8]

Lola

Lola is a prostitute who appears on promotional artwork for the game.[8] She can be seen giving Niko a kiss on the cheek in the third trailer, "Move Up, Ladies". In October 2007, her character art was painted on the side of a building in SoHo, New York, advertising the game.[9]

Karen

Karen is the receptionist at Goldberg, Ligner and Shyster. She directs Niko towards Tom Goldberg's office.

Vladimir Tolkbanyev

Vlad is a small-time Russian criminal, who wishes to be a powerful gangster and presents himself as such. He runs a small-time organized crime ring in the Hove Beach section of Broker. He tries to rise in power by talking with more influential gangsters.[5]

Manny

Manny is a former hoodlum who has apparently changed his ways, and now wants to clean up the streets.[5] He is currently recording a documentary explaining his struggles and problems.

Brucie

Brucie is a fitness enthusiast and a loud person, who enjoys fine women and cars. He enjoys the attention he gets from being rich. He sports a tattoo of a Chinese symbol meaning "Me" or "I".[5]

Playboy X

Playboy X is a criminal acquaintence of Elizabeta who, like his name implies, is living the high-life in a mansion filled with half-naked women. He meets Niko through Elizabeta and eventually hires him for missions.

Dwayne Ford

Dwayne is an old friend of Playboy X and taught him all the tricks of the criminal trade. Just out of prison, he now works for Playboy X, but fears that his friend's new lifestyle is making him forget where he came from.

Ray

Ray is a member of the Mafia.

Bell

Bell is another member of the Mafia.

Mallorie

Mallorie is Roman Bellic's girlfriend, although she is deciding whether or not to take him seriously because of his fantacist nature[10].

Lazlow

Lazlow has been confirmed to be on the games radio stations.
