The Waterloo Regional Municipality is a large urban area in Southern Ontario comprising the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge, all of which have populations over 100 000. In the Waterloo Region, there are 31 buildings that stand taller than 50 m (164 ft). The tallest building in the area is the 18-storey, 78 m (256 ft) Clarica Building,[1] in Waterloo, while the tallest building in Kitchener is the 66 m (217 ft) Canada Trust Centre, and in Cambridge, the 50 m (164 ft) Black Forest Condominium. The majority of the high-rises in the area are in Kitchener, though Waterloo does contain a significant amount. Cambridge has only 8 buildings that exceed 35 m (115 ft).
As of February 2011[update], the region contains 31 skyscrapers over 50 m (164 ft) and 70 high-rise buildings that exceed 35 m (115 ft) in height.[2][3][4]
The tallest development that is under construction in the Waterloo Region is the X-Flats in Waterloo, at 55 m (180 ft) and 18 floors. As of February 2011[update], there are 16 high-rises under construction, approved for construction, and proposed for construction in the Waterloo Regional Municipality.[2][3][4] If built, City Centre I, at 67 m (220 ft) will be the tallest building in Kitchener upon completion, part of Kitchener's city centre redevelopment project.
