Madeira Park
Madeira Park is an unincorporated community in the area of Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast of southwest British Columbia, Canada. The Pender Harbour area was originally occupied by the Coast Salish First Nations. The first European settler was a man named Charles Irvine who built a log trading post and became involved in the gold rush. In 1904, he sold his property to "Portuguese Joe" Gonsalves and his Salish Coast Nation wife, Susan Harris. According to local sources, either Gonsalves or his daughter named Madeira Park in honour of Madeira Island near Portugal, where Gonsalves had spent his childhood. Madeira Park is the largest community in Pender Hrabour; other, smaller places, include Middlepoint, Francis Peninsula, Kleindale, Garden Bay, Irvines Landing, and Daniel Point. Madeira Park features a marina, elementary school as well as a number of offices and stores including a supermarket, pharmacy, grocery store, liquor store, Sunshine Coast Credit Union branch and coffee shops and restaurants.
