Major A. K. Ravindran (Malayalam:മേജർ രവി),[1] better known by his screen name Major Ravi is a former Indian Army Officer and a Malayali Indian filmmaker.[2]

Personal life

Major Ravi is born to Sri. Kuttisankara Perumbara Nair and Smt. AT Satyabhama in Pattambi, Kerala.

Career

He was a Major in the Indian army. He received President's gallantry medal, joined the Indian army as jawan in 1975 after his schooling and later pursued his studies within the army and graduated from the Army Cadet College to become an officer in the year 1985. He was head of the commando team of the mission code named Operation One-eyed Jack to capture suspects of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, During his commando tenure of four yrs in nsg, he had the opportunity to eliminate 17 dreaded militants in various parts of India. The experiences of which inspired him to direct Keerthi Chakra (film) and Mission 90 Days(2007).[3]

Association with films

After working for around two decades for the Indian Army, he became a military consultant for Indian films. He has worked with Priyadarshan, Rajkumar Santhoshi, Kamal Haasan, and Mani Ratnam.[4] He has earlier made a children's film, Toofan in Hindi in the year 1999, starring Dileep and Saba Khan,[5] which had a last release in 2010, due to censoring issues which is also dubbed into Malayalam as Oru Avadhikaalam. His first feature film is Keerti Chakra, a film on Kashmir militancy.It is a multilingual [6] and emerged as a blockbuster.

His second movie mission 90 days was his own experience of the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case. His third project Kurukshetra based on the Kargil war starring Mohanlal was a sequel to Keerthi Chakra.[7]

The 2010 film Kandahar was a third installment to the Major Mahadevan film series.

The 2012 film Karmayodha starring Mohanlal was a blockbuster.. After three years, in 2015 another beautiful heartouching film Picket 43 starring Prithviraj & Javed Jaffery was made. It turned out to be a superhit film.
