The Mar de Cortés International Airport (IATA: PPE, ICAO: MMPE), also known as Puerto Peñasco International Airport, is the first fully privately funded airport in Mexico. It was built by Grupo Vidanta and is located in La Jolla de Cortés, near Puerto Peñasco in the state of Sonora.[1] The airport’s concrete runway is the fourth runway in Mexico to be built entirely with concrete provided by Cemex.[2] In addition the airport was awarded a Premio Obras Cemex in 2007.[3]
The airport was inaugurated on November 5, 2009 when President Felipe Calderón's presidential plane landed on the runway for the Border Governors' meeting.[4] The airport will be able to handle airplanes of Boeing 767 size and larger. The runway is 2500 meters long and 60 meters wide.[5][6] The main terminals of the airport are now open.[7] Once finished, this airport will be one of the most important in Mexico. The airport is located 15 minutes from the city of Puerto Peñasco and 5 minutes from some of the larger hotel and condominium developments by the Sea of Cortés.
Once fully operational, the airport will be receiving flights from all over the world. Some of the shorter flights will be coming from the U.S. states of Arizona, Nevada, and California, as well as other important cities in Mexico.
As of October 31, 2009 the airport is officially open to the public, and is operating as a Mexican Airport of Entry (M-AOE).[8]
