McIntosh High School is a public secondary school located in Peachtree City, Georgia. The school, governed by the Fayette County School System, was named a Georgia School of Excellence in 2000. Recently, it was named a 2007 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.[1] On April 1, 2008, McIntosh was briefly featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams during a segment regarding high school graduation rates.[2]

History

McIntosh High School, named for William McIntosh, was opened in early December 1981. It was barely completed at the time, with no gym and a dirt parking lot. The school is now known for their famous golf cart parking lot.

Student life

McIntosh has strong athletic programs in soccer and volleyball which won state championships in 2007 and inline hockey which won state championships in 2006 and 2008. The newly added lacrosse program was state runner-up in 2008, they lost in double overtime to the Lovett Lions. Track, tennis, dance, and other sports have done well in previous years. McIntosh also has one of the best academic records of any public school in Georgia, including the highest SAT scores in Fayette County for 2005.[3] . In 2008, McIntosh's ACT scores were reported as the highest in Fayette County and the 3rd highest in the state of Georgia.[4]

McIntosh offers a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular activities, including the drama club, International Thespian Society, debate team, chess club, Beta club, Key club, Academic Bowl, Latin club, foreign language clubs, book club, even so far as the newly formed Tetris Club. Another club is Voices, the school's literature club that also publishes the yearly literary magazine, which generally is released in the spring and is sold by the Voices club for between $2-$6. However both automotive technology and construction have been phased out of the McIntosh curriculum, despite having the facilities to accommodate both. McIntosh also partakes in political banter, as the school hosts the Young Libertarians, Young Federalists, Young Democrats, and the Young Republicans.

Additions

A new gym opened during the 2004-2005 school year, as well as a new auditorium that replaced the existing gym built in 1982.
