Monsters is a 2010 British science fiction film,[2] written and directed by Gareth Edwards.[3] Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy star in the lead roles.[4]

Plot

Alien life forms have spread throughout the U.S.-Mexico border region leading to the quarantine of half of Mexico. The U.S. and Mexican militaries are battling to contain the creatures, with a wall stretching along the American border. The story follows Andrew, an American photojournalist helping his wealthy employer's daughter, Samantha, get back to America. Their journey takes them across Central America and eventually into the 'infected zone'.[5]

Cast

Production

The film was directed by Gareth Edwards, who also worked as the visual effects artist.[6] Allan Niblo and James Richardson of Vertigo Films works as producer on the production.[7] The film is inspired by Steven Spielberg's blockbuster film Jurassic Park.[8] The film was made on a budget of approximately $15,000, with a crew of only two people using prosumer level equipment. The film was shot entirely on location: any settings featured in the film were real locations often used without permission asked in advance, and the extras were just people who happened to be there at the time.[9]

Release

Monsters was part of South by Southwest[10] and on 17 March 2010 Magnet Releasing acquired the rights on the project.[11] The film's premiere theatrical release will take place in Russia on September 30, distributed by Volgafilm.[12] The US theatrical release is set for the October 2010.[13] It had its UK premiere as part of the 64th Edinburgh International Film Festival.[14] On 24 May 2010 DFilms acquired the rights for the Canadian theatrical release.[15] It was part of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival film market.[16] Magnolia Pictures set the US release for Halloween 2010, the 29 October.[17]

Soundtrack

Electronica musician Jon Hopkins composed and performed the score of the film.[18]
