No Mercy (2008)is a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which took place on October 5, 2008 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. It was the 11th event under the No Mercy name and featured talent from the Raw, ECW, and SmackDown brands.[2]
Background
Seven professional wrestling matches were featured on the event's card. Matches were planned with predetermined outcomes by WWE's creative staff and featured wrestlers playing characters for the entertainment of the audience. All wrestlers were from either Raw, SmackDown, or ECW - the three brand divisions to which WWE assigned its employees.
The leading staged rivalry scripted into the pay-per-view on the SmackDown brand was between Triple H (Paul Levesque) and Jeff Hardy over the WWE Championship. It was announced on the September 12, 2008 episode of SmackDown that there would be a Fatal-Four Way match, a standard wrestling match involving four competitors. The winner of the match would challenge Triple H for the WWE Championship at No Mercy. The Brian Kendrick, Shelton Benjamin, Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) (Alvin Burke, Jr.), and Jeff Hardy were the four participants in the match, which Hardy won.[3]
The primary match from the Raw brand was a ladder match, where the objective was to retrieve the championship hanging above the ring using a ladder. World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho (Chris Irvine) will defend the title against Shawn Michaels (Michael Hickenbottom) in this match. It was also announced that Batista (David Bautista) will face John "Bradshaw" Layfield in a standard wrestling match, dubbed in professional wrestling as a singles match, to determine the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.[4]
It was announced on the September 8, 2008 edition of Raw that Candice Michelle (Candice Beckman-Ehrlich) would receive a singles match for the WWE Women's Championship. She would face the winner of a title match between the champion Beth Phoenix (Elizabeth Carolan) and Mickie James, which Phoenix won later during the episode. As a result, Michelle will face Phoenix at No Mercy for the title in a singles match.[4]
During the September 17, 2008 episode of ECW, it was announced that Matt Hardy will defend the ECW Championship against Mark Henry.[5]
It was announced on the September 22, 2008 edition of Raw that Kane (Glen Jacobs) would receive a singles match against Rey Mysterio (Oscar Gutiérrez).[6] On the following week on an episode of Raw, an extra stipulation was added, in which if Kane wins at No Mercy, Mysterio must unmask after the match.[7]
It was also announced that Big Show (Paul Wight) and The Undertaker (Mark Calaway) would have a match, following the events that occurred at Unforgiven.
