Andy Kellman of Allmusic notes that when Now! 42 was released in May 2012, two songs from the collection had topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, several others had reached the Top Ten, "a few selections came close to the Top Ten while a couple stalled nowhere near it." With the final fours tracks once again occupied by songs from potentially upcoming artists, "the time when each volume compiled 20 charting singles is increasingly distant."[3]
