nura is a consumer electronics company based in Melbourne Australia, that designs and manufactures personalized headphone technology. Their proprietary technology automatically monitors otoacoustic emissions to measure a person's hearing in 1-2 minutes.[1]

History

nura was founded in 2015 by Luke Campbell, Dragan Petrovic and Kyle Slater.[2] The company's proprietary technology that measures otoacoustic emissions is based on research Campbell, a medical doctor and hearing scientist[3][4], conducted as part of his PhD on cochlear implants at the University of Melbourne.[5]

Funding

nura received initial funding and product development support from Trike [6] and MedTech.[7]

Melbourne Accelerator Program

The Melbourne Accelerator Program granted nura (then named "nuraloop") an Entrepreneurial Fellowship in 2015[8], giving nura office space, mentoring and $20,000 in funding to develop the initial prototype of the nuraphone using the personalization technology.

Hax

In 2016, nura joined HAX, a hardware accelerator program based out of Shenzen, China, which provided nura with funding to develop the prototype nuraphone into a completed direct-to-market product.[9]

Crowdfunding

nura ran a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter between May 16, 2016 and July 15, 2016[10], to raise funds to begin mass production of the nuraphone.[11]The campaign's initial goal of $100,000 (USD) was reached in 14 hours.[12] [13]The Kickstarter campaign ultimately raised $1.7 million USD from the 8500 backers to become the largest Kickstarter campaign in Australian history[14], while crowdfunding on Indiegogo raised an additional $200,000.[15]

Venture Capital

In January 2017, nura raised a $5 million (USD) seed-funding round, which was led by Blackbird Ventures, SOS Ventures and Qualgro VIC [16], and also included Google Access Chief Executive Craig Barratt, and music industry veterans Ric Salmon and Brian Message from UK-based ATC Management[17]. This was followed by a $15 million Series A round also led by Blackbird Ventures in July 2018[18].

Launch

nura officially began operations on October 3, 2017, giving the general public access to the nuraphone.[19]

Products

nuraphone

The nuraphone is a headphone that personalizes sound by measuring how the human ear responds to different sound frequencies [20] [21], and is patent-protected as the only consumer electronics headphone to do so by monitoring otoacoustic emissions.[22]

Reception

The nuraphone has received positive reviews, with reviewers commending the quality and uniqueness of the nuraphone's personalized sound. [23][24][25][26][27] Some reviewers have noted the nuraphone's unusual combined in-ear and over-ear design [28]; however, many reviewers also praised the comfort and design. [29][30]
