Odoardo Farnese (12 August 1666 – 6 September 1693) was the son and heir of Duke Ranuccio II Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza. He was the Hereditary Prince of Parma from his birth till his death. He was the father of the famously domineering Elisabeth Farnese.

Biography

Born at the Ducal Palace of Colorno in Colorno outside the city of Parma, his mother Isabella d´Este, died some twelve days after giving birth to Odoardo who was the couples only son on 21 August 1666 at Colorno.

His only full sibling was Margherita Maria Farnese, future Duchess of Modena and wife of Francesco II d'Este, Duke of Modena.

His father had been previously married to Princess Margaret Yolande of Savoy, first cousin of Louis XIV but the marriage resulted in no children. His father then married his mother Isabella d´Este, daughter of Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena and Maria Caterina Farnese. His parents were first cousins.

Odoardo Farnese married Countess Palatine Dorothea Sophie of Neuburg by proxy on 3 April 1690. The couple were married publicly at the Parma Cathedral on 17 May 1690.

She was the daughter of the well-connected Philipp Wilhelm, Elector Palatine. The marriage was the first between an Italian prince and a German princess. Dorothea Sophie also bought a large dowry to the Farnese.

Odoardo died before his father and never ruled. His widow Dorothea Sophie of Neuburg remarried Odoardo's half-brother Francesco Farnese on 8 December 1695, who became Duke when his father died in 1694.
