Ophelia is a 2018 British historical romantic drama film directed by Claire McCarthy and written by Semi Chellas, based on the Shakespearean character of the same name and the novel by Lisa Klein. The film stars Daisy Ridley as the titular character, with Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, Tom Felton, Dominic Mafham and George MacKay in supporting roles. The film follows the story of Hamlet, as told by Ophelia's perspective. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.[1]
Plot
Ophelia (Daisy Ridley)[2] is the most trusted lady-in-waiting to the Queen (Naomi Watts).[3] She soon captures the attention of Prince Hamlet (George MacKay) and a forbidden love blossoms. As war brews, lust and betrayal begin to tear Elsinore Castle apart from within in this reimagining of the famed Hamlet.[4]

Production
On May 4, 2016, it was announced that Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts would star in the drama film Ophelia based on the character of same name by William Shakespeare, the film would be based on the novel by Lisa Klein which Claire McCarthy would direct based on the script by Semi Chellas.[5] Covert Media would finance the film, while Daniel Bobker and Ehren Kruger would produce the film along with Sarah Curtis.[5] Bert Marcus is also executive producing the film.[6]
Filming began in April 2017, with a first look image released in May.[7] After three months, principal production wrapped on July 6, 2017. Academy Award winning composer Steven Price signed on to compose the musical score.
Release
While the film is expected to be released sometime in 2018, it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival[8] in January 22, 2018. Critics like The Hollywood Reporter[3] and The Wrap[2] praised the film for its detail and portrayal of Ophelia. The Guardian, while praising the visuals, criticized the dialogue and narrative changes.[9] It currently holds a 46% percent score on Rotten Tomatoes,[10] however, by contrast, Metacritic gave it a positive 65% percent rating.[11]
