15,305 Palauans were registered to vote in the 2012 presidential and general elections, an increase of 1,516 voters from the previous 2009 election.[3]
Presidential and vice presidential primary election
The presidential and vice presidential primary elections were held on September 26, 2012.[1] The top two candidates in the primary qualified for the presidential general election on November 6, 2012. Approximately 12,000 registered voters were eligible to participate.[1]
Presidential primary
Three candidates contested the presidential primary: Incumbent President Johnson Toribiong, former President Tommy Remengesau Jr., and former Vice PresidentSandra Pierantozzi, who served as vice president from 2001 to 2005.[1] Remengesau and Toribiong, who placed first and second respectively in the primary, advanced to the November 6th election.[4]
The presidential election was held on 6 November 2012, coinciding with the nationwide 2012 Palauan general election. Former President Tommy Remengesau defeated incumbent President Johnson Toribiong.
