Etymology
The name "kandanchira" came from an incident happened decades back. There is a part of the vast 'Mundakappadam" (mundakan paddy field) in that locale and there is a 'chira' (small, mud/sand check-dam) to prevent the rain water from Mannamala and other nearby areas, which may destroy the paddy cultivation of the 'mundakappadam'. The chira was made up of mud from the paddy field. One night, due to some rivalry, the upper caste people killed a 'pulaya' (which is considered as an untouchable caste) named "Kandan". They buried him alive in that chira(mud dam). Later people found it "kandan" was buried alive in that chira. But because of the culprits social status nobody protested. Later the people indicated that 'chira' with a prefix 'kandan'; and it became 'Kandanchira'.
