Phoneme Media is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit publishing house sponsored by PEN Center USA.[1] Phoneme was founded in 2013 by translators Brian Hewes and David Shook;[1] as of 2016, Shook held the role of editorial director.[2] The aim of the company is to increase the availability of books and videos from countries and languages underrepresented in English translation.[1]
