- 1827 – Sandford Fleming (pictured), surveyor for Canadian Pacific Railway who established Canadian time zones, is born (d. 1915).[1]
- 1830 – The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad opens its first section, 1½ miles (2.4 km), in Baltimore, Maryland.
- 1836 – John Molson, who established the Champlain and Saint Lawrence Railroad, the first railway into Canada, dies (b. 1763).
- 2005 – A passenger train and freight train collide head-on in Crevalcore, in northern Italy (near Bologna), on the single-track mainline between Bologna and Verona.
