The result of the proposal was no consensus. Dough4872 01:27, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

One of the most prominent features along U.S. Route 89A is the Navajo Bridge, which carries the highway across the Marble Canyon of the Colorado River.

  • Comment: Doesn't the image need to be in use somewhere? --Admrboltz (talk) 21:10, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm not aware of what the requirements are for selected photo, none are formally stated. (As opposed to DYK, where it is specified that the hook must be covered and sourced in the article). However, even if this is a requirement, it's an easy fix. This picture is of higher quality than the ones currently used in either the bridge or US-89A articles. Also, the US-89A article could easily be expanded to accommodate more photos, given in the article's current state, there is significantly more written about the 3 miles in Utah than the 80+ miles in Arizona. =-) Dave (talk) 00:40, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
True. Support --Admrboltz (talk) 17:21, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment Please understand that I like the photo. I think the issue above isn't just is it used in an article, but is the photo used in an article tagged under USRD. The second related note is that this is a candidate for the selected photo of the U.S. Roads portal. We've already informally clarified that the USRD scope as a whole doesn't include bridges, but the proposed caption above bolds a link to a non-USRD article, and leaves the USRD article unbolded. At a minimum, that should be reversed, and the caption should probably be rewritten to emphasize the USRD article. If this were a candidate for the Bridges portal, I would have no objection to what is proposed above. I'm fully aware that sometimes, photographically speaking, the most notable feature of a highway is its bridges, but with a little care the emphasis can be shifted so that readers are directed more to our articles. The result of the proposal was Select I-40 in AZ pic. Dough4872 00:06, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Interstate 70 travels through Glenwood Canyon along the Colorado River.

OK, so I'm not claiming this caption will win any awards, but by God, this picture is gorgeous! Feel free to help with the caption. –Fredddie 04:05, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

And yes, I'm aware it's another Glenwood Canyon nomination. –Fredddie 04:10, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

This is also a gorgeous image, and from an under represented area, AZ. --Admrboltz (talk) 04:16, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

  • Support - We have seen pictures from I-70 in CO in the past, it is nice to see AZ for a change. Dough4872 00:23, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
  • Support I like the Arizona picture better than the Colorado picture because the former has one more non-black/non-brown color of significance.  V 02:47, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Withdraw and archive Spokane River Bridge. Imzadi 1979  01:30, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Select Legacy Parkway. Imzadi 1979  08:34, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

The Spokane River Bridge carries Washington State Route 25 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 28, 1995.

I know it may be early, but I'm aiming for the month this bridge was listed on the NRHP. –CGTalk 04:56, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

  • Oppose Its USRD not Bridges WP... --Admrboltz (talk) 05:01, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
    • To clarify, we will more than likely have a bridge up for January, and the caption your are citing has a red link. Also, the bridge its self isn't all that interesting. --Admrboltz (talk) 04:48, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose for the same reasons as Adm and it's an out of process nomination. (Remember, people got cranky a year ago when we tried to schedule the SAs in advance and a certain WA editor extended the list out for 6 months.) That aside, no this is the US Roads portal, so while bridges are nice, they have their own portal. Imzadi 1979  07:18, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment Using the above logic, the recently featured Tacoma Narrows Bridge and I-35 bridge collapses would have been disqualified (as Tacoma narrows was nominated several months before being featured, and both were of bridges). There is ample precedent for featuring pictures of bridges: Scanning the archives, I see 3 pictures of bridges featured in 2007, 5 in 2008, 4 in 2009 and 5 in 2010. However, if the proposed nomination for February (of Navajo bridge) makes it to the portal, it would be wise to postpone this nomination a few months to avoid giving too much weight to bridges. This logic of oppose solely because this is the roads portal, not bridges is not valid. There will be overlap between the roads and bridges portals, just as their will be between this and the cars portals, train portals, etc. Another example of this is we featured Centralia Pennsylvania on the portal before (though I don't remember in which venue). Centralia is a ghost town, not a road, yet it has crossover appeal. Dave (talk) 16:04, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
  • As I recall, we didn't feature Centralia, we featured a photo of the abandoned section of highway through the soon-to-be-former Centralia with a DYK hook of "one smokin' highway" linked to the highway article. That was the AFD usage, and the previous usage at DYK also featured the highway with Centralia as a supporting link.To fix the above to a roads caption over a bridges caption, you'd need to rewrite it similar to:
Washington State Route 25 crosses the Spokane River Bridge which is on the National Register of Historic Places
That places the emphasis on this being about the highway (bolded, mentioned first) over the bridge. That's the point I want to make. Bridges are going to be the most-photographed sections of some highways, but we need to keep the emphasis on the road, not the bridge. Several of those previous usages pre-date this portal being featured, so my position on this issue has evolved somewhat under the new status. Imzadi 1979  22:23, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
I love the new caption. If we were to postpone this picture, then I would be fine, just between May or June to August. –CGTalk 22:40, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Is it worth mentioning the NRHP? I always get the feeling that the point of NRHP is to be an exclusive list of banalities. I just don't see anything exciting or interesting about this bridge. Thus, I oppose. –Fredddie 23:40, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Imzadi, your second entry makes a lot more sense. I see this as having ambiguity in our guidelines, which I will be bold and try to fix. As to Fredddie's point about the NHRP. You are correct, the NHRP has gotten somewhat politicized and become somewhat of a "me too" list of anything remotely historical. However, aside from suggesting the caption be reformulated, that does not affect the quality of the picture, which should be the focus of this discussion. Dave (talk) 00:15, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Maybe we could make the caption into something like this: Washington State Route 25 crosses the Spokane River Bridge, built in 1941 to replace another span.? –CGTalk 02:38, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose - Bridges is outside the scope of this portal. In addition, the photo is black-and-white, which is not the best choice for a portal photo. Dough4872 02:54, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
    • This an irrelevant point. I counted 9 bridges and a couple viaducts in the archives. –Fredddie 05:02, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment: I'm going to clarify a few points. On the quality/subject matter issue. The photo is well... nothing special. It's from 1993, which was a day and age when color film was cheaper than B&W film. There's no artistic quality gained by this being in black and white, so it loses points on that basis. The photo, if color, might have more of a wow factor, but as it is, it's just bland. It's also a bridge, which isn't especially iconic for it's highway. Iconic structures like the Mackinac Bridge for I-75, the Golden Gate Bride for US 101, or the Eisenhower Tunnel for I-70, carry some wow factor. A beautiful set of colorful scenery does the same. I don't like the redlink, especially when as first proposed, that was the subject of the caption. My suggestion is that when the January photo is selected (and it hasn't been decided this early in the month yet) then we nominate something for February and make April Fool's the only exception to the schedule. (As for comments about the Tacoma Narrows video being selected months early, consensus was that it was a good choice, but better for the anniversary of the collapse. That consensus would have held even if we renominated it in October.) Imzadi 1979  05:00, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
FYI, I do think that opposing over being a black and white photo is valid. However, from my experience, most, if not all, photographs on the HAER are BW. I wouldn't be surprised if the original was in color, and converted to BW to match their guidelines. Dave (talk) 16:06, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
    • Based on all the comments, I'll withdraw this nomination. I'll find a new image that has that "wow" factor and is a bit more relevant to the portal's scope. –CGTalk 05:59, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Amazingly, we've never had a Florida picture. Outside of A1A, I can't think of a more iconic route in Florida than US 1 in the Keys. –Fredddie 22:23, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Support, I like it, but I'd prefer that it be slightly cropped. IMO there's just a little too much concrete in the bottom half of the picture. Dave (talk) 23:36, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
I tried, and it made me think it looks better as it is than it would cropped. Maybe someone else can attempt to crop and give an opinion. –Fredddie 02:09, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I agree, it wouldn't look right cropped that way. If anything, it should be cropped to remove some of the sky, pushing the horizon line to the upper third line. With a little cropping from the sides as well, we should be able to put the road along some part of the lines as well. I'll see what I can do. Imzadi 1979  02:53, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - where's the road? --Rschen7754 09:09, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm not sure if you're asking a serious or rhetorical question, but assuming serious, it's not in the foreground but it goes across the picture. It's most easily visible on the far right edge about half way down. Visible is fresh rock cut, from then one can follow the ribbon across the photo. Were this picture taken from a somewhat higher vantage point it could be used to show the pre-and post reservoir alignments of US-40. Dave (talk) 22:34, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
That's what I suspected, but if someone can't tell, then it's probably a bad picture for a roads portal. --Rschen7754 01:50, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
