Early career (2005–2007)
[[File:Priyanka Karki winning INFA Most Popular Actor (Female) 2014.jpg|thumb|Karki won INFA Most Popular Actor (Female) in 2014]] After bring crowned Miss Teen Nepal 2005, she worked as a VJ in Kantipur television for two years. She worked in numerous music videos, ads and performed at various stage shows. In 2007, she went to The United States of America for her further education.
Comeback and early success (2011–2013)
The first film Karki signed was Mero Best Friend. She signed this film while she was still in the US. Immediately after 'Mero Best Friend', Karki signed Suresh Darpan Pokhrel's '3 Lovers', which was previously offered to Nisha Adhikari[2][40][41][42] Karki's debut release 3 lovers earned her a nomination for Popular Debutant Actor Female at the Online Filmykhabar Awards 2070 which she won.[43] After 3 Lovers, Karki signed Navaraj Acharya's highly anticipated debut movie, 'Kollywood', which was previously offered to Namrata Shrestha.[44][45] After Kollywood, Karki began shooting for Nepal's first 3D movie, 'Vigilante', directed by Dpendra K Khanal.[46] Although her release Kollywood did not do that well commercially, Karki was applauded for her performance as Kaavya, a strong, determined, independent woman.
Commercial and critical success (2013–present)
After Vigilante, director Khanal repeated Karki in his next venture, Jholay' opposite Dayahang Rai, where she plays the character of a prostitute.[47] which gave her the first taste of box office success. Jholay grossed over 10 million at the box office, giving Karki her first blockbuster.[48] Her next big release then was Bikash Acharya's Nai Nabannu La 2 opposite Suraj Singh Thakuri. Nai Na Bhannu La was declared the biggest block-buster of the year 2070 grossing over 40 million.[6]
With two back to back hits, Karki was then also known as the most vesatile and unstoppable actor in the industry. Karki's outstanding work in her movies Jholay and Nai Na Bhannu la 2 earned her the Online Filmykhabar Award as Best Actress 2071,[9][10] NETFA award for Best Actor in a supporting role (Female).,[8][9][10][11] INFA award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female) and INFA Most Popular Actor (Female)[12]
Karki's next release Aawaran did not do that well at the box office but her work was praised immensely.[49][50] Although not a commercial success, this movie launched Karki as a singer in the Nepali music industry. Karki went on to sing the OST of Aawaran in collaboration with Yama Buddha. The song was a blockbuster and Karki's singing abilities were highly appreciated.[51]
In July, King Khan was in Nepal for a promotional event of Kansai Nerolac. The event that took place in Yak and Yeti, was a closed event and Karki was the only Nepalese actor to perform in the same stage as Sharukh Khan.[52]
Karki's Suntali was officially selected to premier at the 19th Busan International Film Festival under the category 'A Window on Asian Cinema' which was held in South Korea's Busan, from 2 till 11 October 2014. Suntali's world premiere was held on the fifth day of the festival.[53][54] Suntali released February 2015 and although it wasn't that successful commercially, Karki's work was immensely praised and she won the Best Actor (Female) at the National Film Critics Award (NFCA) and also at the NFDC National Film Awards 2071[55][56] Ex late Prime Minister Sushil Koirala met with the actress and congratulated on her winning the NFDC National Awards Best Actor Female[57]
2015 saw Karki in the horror/thriller Mala as Mala. Mala, a widow, with long black hair, and a white saree is seen throughout the film but she barely speaks. Both the film and her character were appreciated by the critics.[58][59] According to a rveiew by "977Mag", 'Priyanka Karki as Mala is superb. This may be the first time she has portrayed such a character. Throughout the movie she speaks only one word. She expresses her pain and feelings from her expression which is superb. A village girl to a soul, she has perfect screen presence which will get huge appreciation'.[59] At the recent NFDC National Film Awards 2071, the Jury award was conferred to director Sudip Singh Bhusal for 'Mala'[55]
In 2016, Karki was seen as 'Ani' in the fourth installment of the Nai Na Bhannu La series. Nai Na bhannu la 4 was a blockbuster grossing over 20 million in its first week of release.[60] Right after that, Karki was seen as a female detective opposite Keki Adhikari in the comedy 'How Funny'. How Funny was a commercial success grossing over 10 million within 4 days of its release[61] Karki's next anticipated releases are Chakka Panja and Purano Dunga.
Music career
Karki's movie Aawaran launched her as a singer in the Nepali music industry. Karki went on to sing the OST of Aawaran in collaboration with Yama Buddha. The song was a blockbuster and Karki's singing abilities were highly appreciated.[51] Karki says this appreciation and support encouraged her to work on her first music album that will have a total of 7 tracks.[62]
Karki recently recorded Bachchu Kailash's classic "Timi le ta Hoina" in her voice and released a very simple video for it.[63] The video got more than 50,000 views and 5000 shares in less than 24 hours. Karki however received mixed feedback for her version of the song. Famous blogger Lexlimbu quoted, 'She sounds lovely! Very chirpy and bubbly in this version'.[64]
Karki also collaborated with YouTube star Nattu Shah and recorded the cover version of Jason Mraz and Colbie Calliot's 'Lucky'. The cute video got a lot of appreciation.[65] Blogger Lex quoted, 'They sound adorable together and the video is very cute as well. Priyanka looks stunning; more than usual in the video and the friendship/chemistry that comes across the video is oh so natural.'[66]
Karki's debut single "Swatantra", which is about freedom, liberation and independence released on 1 January 2016 and was a massive hit. The single had more than 400000 views the first two weeks and it hit a million views in the first two months[67] International fashion designer Prabal Gurung tweeted about Karki's single saying "Love this song. Love it's from Nepal. Introducing the world to the talented Priyanka Karki."[68]
On Valentine's Day 2016, Karki then released another cover song, "Maya ta Maya ho" along with Ayushman Deshraj Shrestha. The song has over a million views.[69]
