Prozis is an internet-based Portuguese brand that pertains to the Prozis.group and is active in the sports nutrition sector.[1] The company has operational headquarters in Esposende and for tax purposes is headquartered in Madeira Island’s special economic zone.[2] Prozis was founded in 2007 by Miguel Milhão.[3] In 2015, it employed over 230 people and had a revenue of more than 45 million euros.[4][5] By 2016, It already was one of the biggest sports nutrition online stores in Europe, with over 800,000 registered and active customers across more than 100 markets.[6] Besides selling sports supplements online and in large supermarket chains (like Continente in Portugal), it also produces them on a large scale at its production facility in Póvoa de Lanhoso, in which an amount of 5 million euros was invested.[6] Its research and development center is located in Maia.[7]

Partnerships[edit]

Prozis is a partner of the ATRP (Associação de Trail Running de Portugal, the Portuguese Trail Running Association)[8] and became a sponsor of the Portuguese Trail Running Championships as of 2016, as a naming partner.[9] The championships are made up of four competitions, of which three are national championships and one is the Portuguese Cup. In turn, these competitions are divided over 24 events, and over 100,000 athletes are expected to participate.[10] In this discipline only, Prozis already invested approximately 1 million euros.[11]

Prozis is also the official nutrition supplier of European football clubs such as Valencia CF in Spain,[12][13] AS Monaco FC in France,[14][15] AS Roma[16] and Inter Milan[17] in Italy, and several clubs in Portugal: FC Porto,[18] S.L. Benfica,[19] Sporting CP,[20] S. C. Braga,[21] Vitória S.C.,[22] F.C. Paços de Ferreira,[23] Rio Ave F.C.,[24] G.D. Chaves,[25] S.C. Olhanense,[26] C.D. Aves,[27][28] S.C. Freamunde,[29] Varzim S.C.,[30] Vitória F.C. (Setúbal),[31] F.C. Famalicão[32] and Académica.[33] It also sponsors the sports careers of Portuguese surfers such as António Rodrigues, Carol Henrique and Miguel Blanco.[34]

Since January 2017 Prozis is the official nutrition supplier of Lega Basket Serie A (LBA)[35] and the title-sponsor for the 2017 Italian Supercup.[36]

Prozis also expanded into eSports by partnering with Bluejays Sports, a German eSports organisation, in July 2018.[37]

Controversies[edit]

In June 2022, Miguel Milhão, owner and founder of Prozis, posted on LinkedIn: "It seems that unborn babies got their rights back in USA! Nature is healing!".[38] He also defended gun ownership rights.[39]

In early 2024, the French media StreetPress [fr] questioned the political orientation of Prozis's partnerships, as several French affiliates belong to far-right and Neo-Nazi movements. They also criticized the positioning of Miguel Milhao in relation to anti-abortion declarations.[40] Regarding these controversies, Miguel Milhão has declared: "People can do what they want, this isn't going to change. Everyone has their own ideas and my ideas are my ideas, not Prozis' ideas. Prozis has no ideas, Prozis is a company that lives to produce goods and services, it's as simple as that," clarified Miguel Milhão, who also reported on the position of many influencers who were in favor of his point of view.[41]

In 2024, while interviewing the leader of Chega party in his videocast, Milhão called André Ventura “Portugal’s next Prime Minister” and said that in his own opinion Chega also is socialist in nature, and that he doesn’t vote in the Portuguese legislative elections because there aren’t true economically liberal parties in the country, also stating that he is a believer in god and a Christian.[38]

Between 2014 and 2020, the owner of Prozis received €17,671,471, which places him 18th on the list of Portuguese (or other citizens based in Portugal) who received the most funds or subsidies from the European Union. After that year (2020), SÁBADO magazine detected two more approved projects totalling €815,270. In total, the businessman received at least €18,486,741 from the European Union in funds or subsidies.[42]

Awards and recognition[edit]

Prozis was one of the brands that received, in Portugal, the "Escolha do Consumidor 2016" (Consumer's Choice) award in the area of health and well-being, more specifically in the category "Sports Supplements".[43][44] For its success in exports, Prozis was also awarded the "Prémio Exportadora Revelação" (Exports Revelation Award), destined to distinguish and promote the success of companies that strive for export and international business. This prize was an initiative of Novobanco and Jornal de Negócios in a partnership with IGNIOS, who together created the 2016 edition of the Export and Internationalisation awards.[45]
