PwnageTool is an iPhone jailbreaking application for Mac OS X that creates custom iOS firmware images to user-defined specifications. These firmware images often contain the APT interface Cydia as well as additional APT packages.^{[citation needed]}

Releases

PwnageTool was initially released April 3, 2008. It became popular when version 2.0 of iOS was released July 19, 2008.^{[citation needed]}

1.x: Initial Release

2.x: Second Major Release

2.0.1	Aug 4, 2008	Jailbreaks iPhone OS version 2.0.1. Is backwards compatible with iPhone OS version 2.0.
2.0.2	Aug 21, 2008	Jailbreaks iPhone OS version 2.0.2.^[2] Backwards compatible to iPhone OS versions 2.0.1 and 2.0. Fixes a bug where clicking on a button does not always move you to the next page.
2.0.3	Aug 25, 2008	Compatible with iTunes 8 Jailbreaks versions 2.0,2.0.1 and 2.0.2
2.1	Sep 13, 2008	Jailbreaks iPhone OS version 2.1 on the original iPhone, or version 2.2.1 on the iPod touch. No longer backwards compatible with previous iPhone OS versions. Can install Apt packages directly from the interface. New graphics and sounds.
2.2.1	Nov 21, 2008	Jailbreaks iPhone OS versions 2.2 and 2.2.1. Searches for firmware files faster.
2.2.5	Jan 30, 2009	Includes bug fixes.

3.x: Third Major Release of PwnageTool

3.1	Sep 15, 2009	Jailbreaks iPhone OS version 3.1 for the original iPhone, 3G and 3GS, as well as version 3.1.1 for the iPod Touch 1G and 2G. Includes a workaround for a 1600 error when restoring the custom firmware image.
3.1.4	Oct 13, 2009	Jailbreaks iPhone OS version 3.1.2 for the original iPhone, 3G and 3GS, as well as iPod Touch 1G, 2G (both models) and 3G/ Tethered jailbreak on devices not vulnerable to Pwnage, Pwnage2 or 24kpwn.
3.1.5	Feb 7, 2010	Jailbreaks iPhone OS version 3.1.3 for the original iPhone, 3G and 3GS (old-bootrom only), as well as iPod Touch 1G and 2G (MB model only) Backwards compatible with iPhone OS 3.1.2 (still tethered on iPod touch 3G, 2G-MC and new boot-rom iPhone 3GS)

Platform support

Although PwnageTool is only for Mac OS X, a Microsoft Windows version called WinPwn was developed but is now retired.
