Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie–Marquette
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie(-Marquette/ in Michigan), previously a residential episcopal see of the Catholic Church in Michigan, USA, is now a titular see.[1]
History
Established on July 29, 1853, as Apostolic Vicariate of Upper Michigan, on territory split off from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Detroit, notably the northern part of Michigan, headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie.[2] with Holy Name of Mary in the see city as the cathedral church [3] and episcopal see.
Promoted on January 9, 1857, as Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie, on October 23, 1865, renamed as Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie–Marquette
Formally suppressed on January 3, 1937, its territory being reassigned to establish Diocese of Marquette, while in fact the see city of the diocese was transferred to Marquette, [4] to where the incumbent was appointed first Bishop.

Titular see
The diocese was nominally restored in 1995 as Latin Catholic Titular bishopric of Sault Sainte Marie and in 1996 renamed as Sault Sainte Marie in Michigan, under which name it has had the following incumbents, so far of the fitting episcopal (lowest) rank :
- Allen Henry Vigneron (Jun 12, 1996 – Jan 10, 2003) - the later Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit (January 5, 2009 – ..., also Ecclesiastical Superior of Mission sui iuris of Cayman Island, January 5, 2009. – ...) was the titular Bishop of this see from 1996 to 2003 while serving as the Auxiliary Bishop of the same diocese; later Coadjutor Bishop of Oakland (USA) (Jan 10, 2003 – Oct 1, 2003), succeeding as Bishop of Oakland (USA) (2003.10.01 – 2009.01.05).
- Francis J. Kane (January 24, 2003 – ...), as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago is the current Titular Bishop of Sault Sainte Marie.
