Roman Kostenko

Roman Vasyliovych Kostenko (Ukrainian: Роман Васильович Костенко; born October 21, 1983) is a Ukrainian politician. He is a secretary of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, a member of Verkhovna Rada,[1] and a veteran of the anti-terrorist operation "Cyborg".[2] His military call sign is "Thunder" (Ukrainian: Гром, romanizedHrom).

From April 2014 to May 2019, Kostenko took an active part in the battlefield engagement during the anti-terrorist joint forces operation counteracting the activities of illegal Russian and pro-Russian armed groups in the war in eastern Ukraine.

Life and career

In 2005, Kostenko graduated from the Odessa Military Academy (formerly the Ground Forces Institute of Odessa). His special field is "combat use and action management of units (units, formations) of the Ground Forces". In 2020 Kostenko graduated from the National Academy of State Administration of the president of Ukraine (master of public administration). He was a platoon commander and a deputy commander of the reconnaissance company of the Airborne Brigade in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.[3] Later he served as a colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine and held senior positions in the Special Operations Center "A" ("Alpha") of the Security Service of Ukraine.

Kostenko ran in the parliamentary elections of 2019 for (representative of the Holos party, number 14 on the list).[4] He became a people's deputy of Ukraine of the 9th convocation of the Verkhovna Rada.[1] He has been a secretary of the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence (since August 29, 2019).[5] He is also the deputy member of the permanent delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Awards

He received the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky of the III degree (December 26, 2014) for personal courage and heroism shown in defending the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, loyalty to the military oath.[6]

He is also a Hero of Ukraine.[7]
