Roscrea railway station serves the town of Roscrea, County Tipperary, in Ireland.
Roscrea station is on the Limerick-Ballybrophy railway line of the Irish railway network connecting to the main Cork-Dublin line at Ballybrophy. It is listed as a protected structure by Tipperary County Council (RPS Ref RC093).[1] The station is staffed and has a car park.[2]
Closure proposed
A January 2012 national newspaper article suggested that Irish Rail was expected to seek permission from the National Transport Authority to close the line.[3] On a trial basis an enhanced timetable was in force during 2012 however the service was again reduced from February 2013.[4]
History
The station opened on 19 October 1857.[5] At one time there was a branch from Roscrea to nearby Birr in County Offaly, a line which ran on to Portumna in County Galway. That branch is now closed.
