Ryan Marcus Leon Hall (born 4 January 1988) is a footballer who plays as a midfielder for Luton Town.

Born in Dulwich to a West Indian father and a white mother, he came through the youth system at Crystal Palace before graduating to the first team squad in 2006. After loan spells at Lewes, Dagenham & Redbridge, Crawley Town he moved to Bromley in 2008 from where he transferred to Southend United in 2010. Having become a first team regular at Southend he was signed by Championship side Leeds United at the start of 2013 but having failed to feature regularly he was loaned to Sheffield United the following season. After breach of club discipline he was released by Leeds in November 2013, from where he rejoined Bromley on a short term deal, before signing for Milton Keynes Dons. Hall has also represented England C at international level.

Club career

Crystal Palace

Hall came through the Crystal Palace academy, but was overlooked for the first-team by manager Iain Dowie and his successor Peter Taylor, and was sent on loan to Lewes of the Conference South to gain experience during the 2006–07 season, scoring on his debut. Whilst at Lewes, Hall caused controversy after being involved in a fracas at a five-a-side football tournament, which resulted in a security guard being hospitalised with facial injuries.[2]

Returning to his parent club, Hall finally made his Palace début as a late substitute in the 2007–08 season and appeared again in an FA Cup defeat before moving to League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge on loan,[3] impressing enough to have the loan spell extended for a second month.[4] Hall returned to Palace having scored twice in eight appearances for the Daggers, but after failing to progress into the Palace team under new manager Neil Warnock, Hall then moved to Crawley Town where he pursued the same record as he did at Dagenham.

Bromley

Hall moved to Conference South side Bromley on a permanent basis in 2008. He become a first team regular with the club, scoring 16 goals in 58 appearances across two seasons. Hall played as a trialist for League Two side Grimsby Town reserves against Hartlepool United in March 2009.

Southend United

On 16 July 2010, Hall signed a pre-contract agreement with Southend United due to the club being under a transfer embargo. The embargo was lifted on 6 August 2010 and Hall's transfer was registered to the FA. Hall missed Southend's first game of the season against Stockport County due to suspension after he picked up a red card playing for Bromley in the last game of the previous season, but made his début for Southend against Bristol City in the League Cup on 10 August 2010.

On 15 January 2011, Hall scored his first goal for Southend, netting after just 32 seconds against Rotherham United in a 2–1 win. Hall signed a two-year contract extension with Southend in April 2011, and finished as runner-up in Southend's Player of the Year award, behind Chris Barker. Over the course of the season he achieved more assists than any other player in League Two.[5]

In Hall's second season at Southend he scored 14 goals and gained 25 assists, his 25 assists being the highest assist ratio in the top four divisions.[6] In August 2012, Hall was subject of a bid from Championship club Peterborough United.[7] After Hall fell out with manager Paul Sturrock during the 2012–13 pre season, Sturrock claimed Hall was not 'mentally attuned' to play at that present time due to the transfer speculation surrounding him.[8] Hall joined Blackpool on trial and started training with the club on 13 September.[9] After Blackpool had a bid for the player accepted, the move fell through as the club and player were unable to agree personal terms.[10] After the move fell through, Hall claimed that Southend chairman Ron Martin thought that too much had gone on at the club for Hall to return to Southend, as a result Hall was made to train alone.[11]

Leeds United

By October 2012, Hall was interesting Championship club Leeds United who wanted to sign him on loan, with the view to the move subsequently becoming permanent.[12] Leeds finalised the deal with Southend in October 2012,[13] reuniting Hall with former manager Neil Warnock, who had sold Hall when both were at Crystal Palace.[14][15] Hall was given the number 30 shirt, and made his debut in a 1–0 loss against Birmingham City as a late substitute.[16] To help build up his match fitness, Hall was put into Leeds' development squad where he scored four goals in one game against Derby County reserves.[17] Hall made his first start for Leeds against Millwall in November.[18] Following the takeover of Leeds United by GFH Capital in December 2012, the club finalised a deal with Southend United to sign Hall permanently, agreeing a two-and-a-half year contract with the player.[19][20]

Hall failed to cement a place in the Leeds first team and agreed a one-month loan deal with Sheffield United in September 2013.[21] Hall made five appearances for Sheffield United during his loan, but on his return to his parent club, Leeds United announced that Hall had been suspended pending an investigation into a breach of discipline.[22] Hall was subsequently released from his contract in November 2013.[23]

Return to Bromley

On 6 December 2013, Hall rejoined Bromley on a short term deal. He had offered to play for the club free of charge, as a way of thanks to manager Mark Goldberg for restarting his career following his release from Crystal Palace in 2008.[24] He made his return in a 3–0 home win against Farnborough a day after rejoining, coming on as a second-half substitute.

Milton Keynes Dons

On 4 February 2014, Hall signed for Milton Keynes Dons of League One until the end of the 2013–14 season.[25] He made his début four days after signing, as a second-half substitute in a 3–0 away win against Walsall.

Rotherham United

During the 2014–15 pre-season, Hall joined Rotherham United on a free transfer, scoring the first Championship league goal at the New York Stadium.[26] He failed to break into the team as a regular, and joined Notts County on a one-month loan.[27] He played in four league games and two Football League Trophy matches before returning to Rotherham.

Luton Town

On 31 January 2015, Hall joined Luton Town of League Two on a free transfer, signing an 18-month contract.[28]

International career

On 22 May 2010, Hall was called up to the England C by manager Paul Fairclough.[29] Hall made his debut for England C as a substitute, replacing Max Porter against the Republic of Ireland U23 team in the International Challenge Trophy on 26 May 2010.[30]

Criminal conviction

In March 2011, Hall was sentenced to 20 weeks imprisonment after pleading guilty to affray, following an incident outside a Southend nightclub at the club's Christmas party in December 2010. The court heard that Hall retaliated to racist comments made to him, and that he suffered a broken jaw in the altercation.[31] Southend United insisted the player would not be sacked,[32] however Hall was granted bail pending an appeal against the severity of the sentence. Hall's sentence was commuted to 12 weeks, suspended for a year, with 150 hours of community service.
